Service Dog, Who Loved and Served the Veteran Unconditionally, Gets a Warm Farewell on Her Final Flight Back

Service dogs are irreplaceable companions, especially for veterans, offering invaluable support and therapeutic companionship to help manage conditions like PTSD. One Marine Corps veteran, Cole Lyle, found his loyal companion in Kaya, a German Shepherd who accompanied him on countless flights.

Upon returning from a six-year tour in Afghanistan, Cole battled with PTSD and sought various treatments, but it wasn't until a fellow veteran suggested a service dog that he found solace. Cole adopted Kaya, investing $10,000 to have her professionally trained as his service dog.

The investment paid off immensely as Kaya was trained to wake Cole from nightmares and alleviate anxiety attacks. Her presence made a significant difference in Cole's life, even halting his ѕuiϲidаl thoughts. "A dog can be a powerful thing to keep you around," he emphasized, acknowledging Kaya's role in his recovery.

However, Kaya's impact extended beyond Cole's life. With Cole becoming an advisor to the US Senate on veterans' policies, they lobbied for the PAWS Act, which promotes canine training for veterans with PTSD. This bipartisan legislation passed into law in August 2021, thanks in part to their efforts.

Kaya's extraordinary life included encounters with politicians and celebrities, accompanying Cole on numerous flights across the country. Tragically, in January, a tumor under her tongue metastasized, affecting her quality of life. Heartbroken to see his loyal friend suffer, Cole decided to take her on one last flight from Virginia back to their home in Texas, as he didn't want her to pass away far from her birthplace.

Southwest Airlines, their frequent travel companion, learned about Kaya's final journey and orchestrated a touching tribute. During the February 2 flight, the pilot made a special announcement, introducing Kaya and sharing her role as a service dog and advocate for the PAWS Act. He expressed the solemn honor of being a part of Kaya's last flight as she returned to her birthplace to rest.

Passengers onboard applauded Kaya, and as if sensing the appreciation, she raised her head, despite lying down moments earlier. Southwest Airlines also provided a cart to assist Kaya's mobility issues upon their arrival in Dallas.

Sadly, a few days later, Cole announced Kaya's passing, expressing his profound loss and gratitude for the impact she had on his life. He paid tribute to Kaya's well-lived and loved life, acknowledging the pain of her absence but finding solace in her freedom from suffering. Cole thanked her for exemplifying "Semper Fidelis," the Marine Corps motto meaning "Always Faithful."

Rest in peace, Kaya. Though you are no longer with us, your profound impact and unwavering friendship will be remembered forever. May you find eternal peace. 💔

Please help us honor Kaya's incredible journey by sharing this beautiful tribute.
